Smell my cheese you mother

Sad news reaches Foodies South West HQ. Well ok, we read it online like everybody else.

Wheel of misfortune

We love the annual display of people hurtling down a Gloucestershire hillside, risking broken bones and death to grab a wheel of cheese before some other slightly drunken chap.

But alas, it is no more. The health and safety people have stepped in  not because of the danger to contestants, but because so many people turn up to watch.

Apparently 15,000 people turned up last year to watch – three times the number the site at Cooper’s Hill, near Brockworth can safely handle.

It’s a shame that this last bastion of allowed danger is to end because too many people turned up to cheer.

But there is good news. Organisers are talking to police etc about improving safety at the site so it can return in 2011. Hurrah and huzzah!

I wrote that story! Well, the latter part of it anyway. Keep up the good work! 😉

What a shame! I’ve always wanted to give it a try. There are few things I’d throw myself down a hill for, and cheese is definitely one of them. 🙂
