Scientists believe Robert Green's gloves have new anti-stick properties

Yeah ok, Robert Green’s hands appear to be teflon-coated and Shaun Wright-Phillips shouldn’t be anywhere near the team. But cheer up, we looked better than France. And to celebrate that small mercy, here’s a lightning quick and lazy Sunday supper you can knock together before sitting down to see Germany get beaten by Australia. Maybe.

It is a great little recipe I knocked up for me and my girlfriend the other night. It takes 20 minutes from start to finish and serves two.

Ingredients:

Five squid tubes, sliced into rings
New potatoes – say six medium-sized ones or equivalent
A tin/carton of chopped tomatoes
Three cloves of garlic, crushed and rough chopped
One large chilli, deseeded and roughly chopped
Olive oil
Fresh basil, chopped

Method:

Set the potatoes to boil gently for 20 minutes. While they are boiling prepare the other ingredients.

Five minutes before the potatoes are done, put a generous slug of oil into a large deep sauté pan or frying pan. When it is hot, add the garlic and chilli and fry til the garlic colours.

Add the squid and fry for no more than four minutes.

While that is frying drain the potatoes, halve them and adding the tomatoes and chopped basil return them to the hob and heat them through.

Add the potatoes and tomatoes to the squid and turn off the heat.

Serve in wide shallow bowls accompanied by some crusty bread and a chilled glass of white wine. Voilà.
